The Salvation Army is one of the most diverse, encompassing and respected charitable organizations in the World. With a history traced back to England over 140 years ago, the Salvation Army operates in over 100 countries world wide. The spiritual and social ministry of the Salvation Army addresses an awesome gamut of social and medical problems that include but is not limited to the operation of hospitals and medical clinics; drug and alcohol centers/programs; a wide range of educational resources; international community and business development projects such as micro-credit programs; disaster response; water/sanitation projects. There is not other organization like the Salvation Army with the scope, dedication and commitment to improving the human condition than the tens of thousands of “soldiers” who carry out such an inclusive, important and benevolent mission.
The Salvation Army has a long and successful history in Portland. This mission locally has recently seen a significant investment and improvement with the recent completion and dedication of a new $ 20 million 120 bed drug and alcohol treatment facility along with a complementary administrative offices and warehouse operation near the Portland airport on Northeast 82nd Drive. This beautiful campus replaces two older but beloved facilities located in Portland’s eastside on SE MLK. “We have accomplished considerable good work at these facilities in the heart of people but though we will miss being in the core of Portland, our new campus will allow us to serve a larger population in a much more efficient and beautiful setting ” Captain Eric Wilkerson of the Salvation Army’s comments.
These two facilities and accompanying parking lot occupy excellent core locations along southeast MLK Blvd, 2 blocks from the Burnside Bridge, future Burnside Bridge Project, new Couch/Burnside Couplet and also has frontage along the new trolley loop through the eastside.
